Are the Big 3 Worth Bailing Out?
Are the big three American Car Manufacturer’s worth bailing out? I am on the fence about this topic. I don’t want to see the thousands of jobs lost due to the companies failing, however, I am not so sure that throwing money at them will be enough to change the way they do business.
Ford, GM, and Chrysler have all continued to push their large trucks and SUVs despite sales continuing to drop. As gas prices went higher and higher, the demand for hybrid and fuel efficient cars increased. The big 3 didn’t change their strategy, instead they continued to push products that weren’t selling. This has been causing them to lose huge amounts of money as their inventory sits.
What do you think about the Bailout?
I think, if anything, there will be a compromise in which the car companies will receive loans, and in turn must change their business strategy. Because of this, we may see a bigger push for electric and hybrid vehicles similar to Toyota and Honda. One of the biggest problems, I believe, is that the American car models that they offer are not what they public is after. If the car companies were to put out vehicles which fit the trends and lifestyles of Americans, they may have a better chance at making a comeback.
