Practical Wisdom Needed
Following the creator of Twitter, @ev,- I found a great Ted Talk by Barry Schwartz who makes a powerful argument for “practical wisdom” as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. This talk is inspirational, moving, and is in line with the current economic condition of the U.S. and the world.
This blog focuses on business development and branding, yet this talk has a lot to do with those subjects. Schwartz talks about morale and being moral, empowering employees and practitioners to do the right thing. This is a very important part of business development because if you have a company, but your employees don’t believe in what it is they are doing, then you have not done your job as an entrepreneur. As a whole, as a society, we must all become wiser and focus more on doing the right thing.
Who is Barry Schwartz?
Barry studies the relationship between economics and psychology. In his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice, he tackles one of the great mysteries of modern life: Why is it that societies of great abundance-where individuals are offered more freedom and choice (personal, profossional, material) than ever before – are now witnessing a near-epidemic of depression?
Conventional wisdom tells us that greater choice is for the greater good, but Schwartz argues the opposite.
