Living A Mobile Lifestyle
Over the last couple decades, consumerism reached its highest level. People were willing to consume just about anything, especially if it was the newest, biggest, best model. While that is still going on for a smaller percentage of the world population as it always will, the majority of people have nearly stopped completely consuming more than they need. Which brings me to the point of this blog post.
In my transition from California to Hawaii, I had to make a lot of decisions regarding what to do with my possessions. While I do not own much, I still felt I had too much to take with me to the islands. I donated nearly all of my belongings or gave them to friends who were in need. When I was done, I was left with the essentials: a laptop, cell phone, books, movies, and clothes. Luckily, what I packed was able to fit into my car- barely.
Why A Mobile Lifestyle
My new position requires that I travel fairly frequently for work throughout the Pacific. Combine that with the fact that I am on an island, I will be traveling a whole lot more to see friends, family, and to explore the world.
I like the idea of a mobile lifestyle as it allows you the freedom to do what needs to be done wherever you may be in the world. Utilizing the internet allows for a mobile lifestyle. There are still challenges, just as with anything, but as the world uses the internet more, the easier it will be to be mobile. For so long, it seemed as though technology was great, but only if you were at your house, at your desk, on a desktop.
I want to be able to access information, pay bills, make purchases, whatever needs to be done, on the go in some mobile form. Whether it is an application on my iPhone that lets me transfer funds between bank accounts to having my laptop handy to upload new photos and blog posts, to being able to log in to my bank and having them send out checks on my behalf to pay bills while out of the country. It is all possible and it is still in the early stages.
Tools of the Trade
Transitioning to a mobile lifestyle can be quite a challenge for a total beginner. However, with today’s technology, it is easier than you may think. The right tools and applications will allow you to easily take care of business and personal tasks on the go.
I prefer my tech gadgets to be able to communicate well together- in other words to sync automatically and make things easy. I value my time and do not want to get caught up in trying to tackle technical issues while traveling.
As you may know from earlier posts, I use a MacBook as my primary computer, an iPhone, and various web services to handle my needs. But that is just me.
